Low-grade recreation vs High-grade recreation

Have you been watching too much youtube or Instagram? Or spent a lot of time on articles? My understanding is that recreation is important. I think it helps us process what is going on in our lives. If my mood is compatible, I will watch MMA or see what Connor McGregor is up to or which rapper is fighting which other rapper today. If my mood is spiritual, I will look up some spiritually stimulating talk with which I agree.

But, and this is important ... there is more to how we spend our leisure time ...

My understanding is that there are 2 grades of recreation ... one is the low-grade recreation - it takes up a lot of time but does not give that much gratification - hours on Insta ... youtube ... watching cookery shows etc. If you add up the hours, 100s of hours go into such activities. In short bursts, this kind of recreation is healthy but as the time increases, it starts replacing real life.

And there is a higher grade of recreation, it is the actual participation in recreation. It is actually visiting that beautiful place in Hawaii or Nandi Hills, it is the going on the adventure or trying to cook a new dish yourself. It is actually giving a talk yourself instead of watching Ted talks and avoiding the fear of preparation. This kind of recreation is thrilling, it transforms us, it refreshes us, and prepares us for the new.

If you are watching too much of something ... try to see what it is that is attracting you and go in for high-grade recreation in your life. If you are attracted to travel bloggers, plan a trip, even if it is to a local park. If you are staring at beautiful models, consider going to a gym yourself. Include the more wholesome version of whatever is attracting your attention in low-grade recreation ... and not only will it refresh you, it will also reduce the time you spend on low-grade entertainment.
